Cornwall Council – Penzance Promenade
I’m a Londoner a long way from home.
Born and brought up in South London by a hard working single mum on a council estate. I left London when I was 23 to go to Bristol as a mature student.
After university I worked as a garden centre manager – I loved working with people, both the team and customers but just selling stuff was not all that fulfilling. We moved to Northamptonshire and I worked for another large garden centre chain. Whilst there I found that I missed the West Country and I was not really into selling people china cats in which to plant chrysanthemums.
In 2005 we moved to Penwith. I decided to use this as an opportunity to start working with people in a more meaningful way. I got a job supporting and teaching ‘rowdy’ kids and school refusers in the local secondary school and found that I loved it. I trained as a Learning Mentor and then as a Parent Support Advisor. I worked in these roles until each of the short-term contracts ended. I then worked as the Extended Schools Coordinator for the St Ives Cluster of schools until 2012. (A great Labour Government initiative!).
I’ve been working for Cornwall Council in community support roles for about 6 years now, in the Localism Team, the Face to Face Team and the Registration Service. I have also been working as a Community Engagement Officer for the Heritage Lottery Fund – working to deliver a wide range of community events and activities.
I have always been politically aware but it is only recently that I have become politically active. Our local town is Penzance and it has been heart breaking to watch the decline of this lovely little town under the auspices of austerity. I have worked with families that are feeling much much more than a ‘squeeze’, they are being squished. It was partly to ‘try and be the change you want to see’ that I joined the Labour Party. I stood for a seat on Penzance Town Council, got out there, campaigned hard, knocked on doors, got soaked and sworn at and, amazingly enough, won! I am, and have been for the last 18 months Mayor of Penzance – an amazng thing to be! I’ve just been selected to be the prospective Cornwall Council candidate for Penzance Promenade in the 2021 Local Government Elections.
I am most definitely a people person – I can talk to anyone and everyone talks to me – it drives my husband nuts sometimes that we can’t get from one end of town to the other without stopping to talk.
